About 4-Term Pathway - International Foundation Year in Social Sciences and Humanities - Continue to Bachelor of Arts - Fine Art and Film
This program will prepare students for entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree in a wide range of subjects, including many based at the £10m LICA building. Popular subjects include law, film studies, sociology, linguistics and politics.
To join this course, students will need to have previously studied one or two languages. Once they join us, their performance will be closely monitored to ensure they’re ready for the challenge of a placement year abroad and completing a postgraduate qualification in just four years.
Students will kickstart their studies at Lancaster exploring areas such as advanced grammar and translation, then advance into their second year in Europe. The partner universities in France, Germany and Spain are familiar with this programme and make sure students cover all the vital Year 2 subjects while they’re away. If students are studying two languages, they’ll split the year between the two countries.
Resilient and Ready For Success
After returning to Lancaster, students will complete a range of modules, including their undergraduate dissertation. In the final year, students will be working at postgraduate level with a fresh choice of topics followed by their postgraduate dissertation. The dissertation topics provide the chance to dive deep into a subject of students' choice. Perhaps they have a favourite piece of work they want to translate with a critical eye? Or maybe they want to dive into research about different dialects?
By the end of the course, students will be extremely resilient on a personal and professional level. Although the course is intense, all the support needed will be provided, from preparation sessions for students' international placement year to workshops that will get them ready for a career as a language graduate. Lancaster also offers resilience training as they recognise the importance of the mental wellbeing of students.
Beginners Languages
In addition to studying one or two languages at advanced level as a major or joint major degree, students have the option to take one beginners level language as a minor subject in their first year. After the first year, they will continue to study their major language/s at an advanced level.
With the beginners language courses, students have the opportunity to develop their skills from scratch to AS level standard in just one year. This is intensive but rewarding, and adds another dimension to their knowledge of modern languages.
