About 3-Term Pathway - Pre-Master's in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - Continue to Master of Science - Advanced Mechanical Engineering
This program will prepare students for entry to a postgraduate degree in a STEM-related subject at Lancaster university, where £17 million is currently being invested in state-of-the-art engineering facilities.
Mechanical engineering combines scientific principles, mathematics, and realisation to design, develop and implement innovative solutions to contemporary problems. This programme will enhance students skills and provide them with advanced subject knowledge to accelerate their engineering career.
From designing replacement hip joints and hospital MRI scanners, to developing autonomous vehicles and monitoring the structural health of offshore windfarms, mechanical engineering contributes greatly to contemporary life and is central to the innovation carried out in many industries.
Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering programme comprises of advanced topics in mechanical engineering and industry linked project work. Students will benefit from the teaching of some of the world’s experts in their fields, a state-of-the-art working environment, and networking opportunities to enhance their career prospects.
Over the course of the year, students will study six taught modules and undertake a major individual project. These will provide them with advanced knowledge while allowing them to develop their specialist skills, which will enable them to take advantage of the many senior engineering and technology employment opportunities available at home and abroad. Students will become familiar with stress analysis, finite element analyses and modelling; renewables including wind, tidal and hydro-power; mechanisms and mechanical design; control and self-learning systems; systems analysis, advanced materials and manufacturing, application of artificial intelligence in engineering, among other topics. At the same time, students will develop capabilities that are highly valued by employers more generally, such as problem-solving, analytical skills and team-working abilities.
A major element of the programme is a dissertation project during which students will undertake independent research and receive one-to-one supervision from an academic specialist, and possibly be working with one of many industry partners. During this project, students will bring together everything that they have learnt and apply it to an advanced individual project. This will allow them to practise their skills and demonstrate their professional competences, thereby improving their employability.
