3-Term Pathway - International Foundation Year in Social Sciences and Humanities - Continue to Bachelor of Arts - German Studies and Linguistics

This program will prepare students for entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree in a wide range of subjects, including many based at the £10m LICA building. Popular subjects include law, film studies, sociology, linguistics and politics.

This four-year combined degree is provided by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. A year abroad gives students a unique opportunity to be immersed in the language and culture. Students don’t need to have studied German before as Lancaster offers an Intensive course for beginners.

In German Studies the aim is to help students become truly fluent. Taking Linguistics in tandem with German Studies will give students increased awareness of the grammar of the language and allow them to really understand the structure of both English, German, and a wide range of other languages from around the world.

The first and second years include a range of core and optional modules. 

The third year living abroad will give students the opportunity to deepen their intercultural sensitivity and their command of the language. Students can study at a partner university or carry out a work placement and practice their language skills in a real-world context. Staff members within the department will work with students to ensure that they are fully equipped before embarking on their year in a German-speaking country.

On their return to Lancaster, their fourth year allows students to develop their German to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C1/C2 levels, and they can specialise in particular fields of study. Students could also choose to complete a dissertation on a topic they would like to explore in-depth.
