2-Term Pathway - Pre-Master's in Social Sciences and Law - Continue to Master of Laws - Criminology and Criminal Justice

This program will prepare students for entry to a postgraduate degree in a wide range of subjects at Lancaster University, including law, design and a world top 10 linguistics program (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

The world is a live laboratory. As a criminologist, graduates can analyse different issues, investigate change as it happens and use theory to make sense of it. By joining Lancaster, students will be helped to look at the motivations behind different crimes and assess potential solutions to key issues.

Understanding society

What are the implications of climate change for policing? Is it time to scale back on prisons? What does society need to know about cannabis cultivation? These are just a few examples of questions one might think about as a criminology student. Instructors will cover the most current challenges and share the research they’re doing right now.

Students will be part of a vibrant community. There’s always something going on within the department, whether that’s a guest lecture or a research group meeting. Staff will talk to students about their latest work too, and share the issues they’ve faced in their own work around ethics, such as finding a safe way to explore cybercrime.

Focus on law

Studying LLM Criminology and Criminal Justice, students will focus on the relationship between law and criminology. The bespoke Research Methods in Law module will help students understand how to carry out ethical research and design projects.

Students will apply everything they’ve learnt to their dissertation. This will look at an area of criminology and its relationship to law. Examples of previous dissertation topics include ’Criminalizing Coercive Control in Indonesia’ and ‘Ethnic Profiling in the context of counter-terrorism in Belgium and the UK’.
