2-Term Pathway - Pre-Master's in Social Sciences and Law - Continue to Master of Arts - Discourse Studies

This program will prepare students for entry to a postgraduate degree in a wide range of subjects at Lancaster University, including law, design and a world top 10 linguistics program (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

Language is at the heart of human behaviour. Lancaster shows methods and techniques for highly detailed analysis of communication, so that students can identify what works and what doesn’t, and help individuals and organisations get their message across more effectively.

Firm Foundations

Students will gain a solid grounding in the key theories and applications of Discourse Studies by studying three core modules. They will also be able to develop their research skills in the fourth core module, Research Methods in Linguistics and English Language. Plus, students can focus on one of their special interests in their dissertation. Previous students have chosen to focus on topics as diverse as cryptocurrencies and charities.

Lancaster is well known for their extensive range of modules, from forensic linguistics to corpus linguistics. Through the core modules students will have the opportunity to apply discourse analysis methods to real-life contexts such as political communication or media reporting.

Outside the Lecture Theatre

Lancaster prides themselves on offering much more than high quality teaching. Join one of the many different research groups, such as Discourse and Text, try one of the lively university societies or take part in one of their international summer schools.

Students need not worry if they’re returning to education or aren’t used to studying in the UK – Lancaster is ready to provide extra support if it is needed. Students can get help with their academic reading, writing and presentation skills.
