Honours Bachelor of Arts - Philosophy and Psychology

About Honours Bachelor of Arts - Philosophy and Psychology
While the pursuit of knowledge has evolved into specialized disciplines, philosophy continues to address the larger, fundamental questions. Students will learn about the intellectual foundations of society, but they will also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that will enable them to re-examine society with an inquisitive mind and a discerning lens.
Students will explore fundamental philosophical concepts, from Ancient Greek to the modern era, in order to understand contemporary thinking about ethics and justice in context. Lakehead University’s programs emphasize reasoning skills, oral debate, and writing proficiency with the balance of coursework dedicated to philosophical topics such as:
- Gender
- Popular Culture
- Paranormal
- Love
- Biomedical Ethics
- Existentialism
- Environmental
Students will graduate from the program with the ability to:
- Analyze and interpret arguments
- Justify beliefs with reference to standards of proof
- Describe major philosophical trends
- Apply a historical understanding to key philosophical questions
- Identify theoretical assumptions
- Plan and conduct research that is accurate, thorough, and broadly based
Due to the multidisciplinary relevance of the field, students may combine their studies with disciplines such as English, History, French, Indigenous Learning, Psychology, or Political Science. Lakehead University is also one of the few universities in Canada to offer a minor in Professional Ethics. This is a great option for those who are interested in examining ethical issues in business, biomedical science, the environment, or digital technology.
Psychologists share a desire to make a positive contribution to human welfare through understanding and influencing the thoughts, emotions, and behavior of individuals. They are concerned with what motivates people, what social, physical, and biological factors affect them, and what makes them unique.
The breadth of study within the Psychology program is what sets Lakehead University apart. Throughout students' undergraduate degree, they will gain at least one credit of exposure to all elements of the disciplines and sub-fields including Biological, Cognitive-Affective, Individual, Social, Abnormal, and Developmental, in addition to their stream electives.
Lakehead University believes flexibility in students' studies equates to flexibility in their career path. The Psychology major can be paired with other majors including Gerontology, Philosophy, Women's Studies, and Education, to explore the intersection of these fields.
Much of Lakehead University's faculty are practicing clinical psychologists with a range of expertise and connections, making it possible to immerse students in research and volunteer opportunities from first year onward.
