Program Description

This interdisciplinary, science-based degree examines the interactions between the geology, biology, chemistry and physics of Earth’s surface, oceans and atmosphere. It gives students a deep understanding of Earth’s environment and how it can be influenced by human activities.

In years one and two students gain a firm grounding in earth sciences, building knowledge to inform their choice of third-year and fourth-year options. The third year also includes an independent field and laboratory project and an industry-standard environmental impact study.

Students will spend half of their final year on a major independent earth science research project. A number of previous students’ project reports have been published in scientific journals, with students presenting their work to experts in the field.

Bristol's close links with industry ensure that the skills gained during their studies are valued by employers. Recent partners have included Shell, Chevron, Reykjavik Energy, Atkins, Environmental Resources Management and EDF.

Bristol has a tightly knit community and a programme of student-run projects, informal seminars and social events. The courses include field trips in the UK and overseas, the cost of which is included in the tuition fee. Students will be invited on a field trip just before their first term starts, so students can get to know their year group before lectures begin.
