Biochemistry is the study of life at the molecular level, encompassing the normal functions of metabolism, DNA replication and repair, and the role of proteins in carrying information within and between cells. Understanding what occurs in normal cells aids scientists in comprehending why things go wrong and what happens when they do.

The degree begins with a broad range of life science topics at Levels 1 and 2, after which students will focus on more detailed aspects of biochemistry at Levels 3 and 4. In their first two years of study, they will explore cell biology, biological organization, molecular mechanisms, and processes. Additionally, they will develop their practical skills, which include laboratory techniques, data analysis, and experiment design. This foundation will prepare them for designing and conducting projects later in their course.

The course curriculum is shaped by the work of world-leading researchers to ensure that students are learning the latest advances, while also gaining a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the field. Throughout the degree, students have the flexibility to select modules that interest them and may also transfer to one of the other courses if they choose the relevant modules.

Laboratory sessions integrated throughout the degree will help students blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills, as well as develop strong transferable skills both in and out of the laboratory.
