Bachelor of Science - Anthropology

Anthropology studies humans from evolution to the present day. It thrives on curiosity and seeks to answer the questions that have always intrigued people, such as:

  • Where do we come from?
  • What does it mean to be human?
  • Why do people act the way they do?
  • Why are things the way they are?

The journey to these answers is fascinating, and the Anthropology program at Illinois State tackles these big questions head-on.

As a student in the program, individuals will dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. They will see firsthand how anthropology significantly impacts issues faced today, such as poverty, health, and social justice.

Learning does not stop in the classroom; the program prioritizes civic engagement. Students will join others who share their passion for helping others and apply their knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.

The field of anthropology is diverse and offers the opportunity for students to pursue their own curiosity. At Illinois State, students receive a foundational education in all the intriguing aspects of anthropology. From there, they can choose to focus on whatever interests them most.

  • Archaeology studies humans through the remains and artifacts left behind centuries ago.
  • Anthropological linguistics focuses on language and its influence on culture and social structure.
  • Cultural anthropology examines the diverse human cultures of the past and present, including beliefs and social norms.
  • Biological anthropology concentrates on the evolution of humans and seeks to understand human diversity.

Regardless of the chosen focus, the program prepares students for any career. Graduates will leave the program with the skills employers seek, such as writing, analysis, communication, and problem-solving. Most students do not pursue careers as anthropologists; instead, they apply their skills in fields such as business, teaching, film, and non-profits.
