About Master of Laws by Research - Business School (W31368)

Research at Edinburgh Napier University is creating high-quality knowledge that benefits the social, cultural, and economic life of the society it serves. Simply put, the aim is to deliver outward-looking research that can transform communities—whether that involves the rollout of a national telemonitoring service to lower blood pressure, saving mangrove forests in Kenya, or establishing the world’s first innovation centre for mountain biking.

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 assessment of every UK university, over two-thirds of all research conducted at Edinburgh Napier University was judged to be either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent,’ providing the best possible confirmation that the university delivers excellent research with substantial real impact, both nationally and internationally.

Individuals can study for a range of research degrees at Edinburgh Napier, all of which provide training in research, enhance employment opportunities, and allow for the development of advanced skills and expertise in a specific area of interest.

A minimum academic qualification is required for each degree option, but in exceptional circumstances, the university will consider applicants without these qualifications if they have extensive relevant experience. To study for a research degree at Edinburgh Napier, candidates will also need to demonstrate excellent written and oral English skills.

The Master of Laws by Research (LLMRes) may appeal to graduating undergraduate law students, postgraduate law students, or legal professionals seeking to undertake further academic study. This programme is particularly well-suited to individuals planning to pursue a PhD in the future or those looking for an alternative to the traditional taught LLM pathway. The LLMRes provides a structured opportunity to enhance legal research skills and to carry out an independent investigation into a selected legal topic.

Candidates enrolled in the LLMRes will produce a thesis of between 20,000 and 30,000 words, representing an independent contribution to legal knowledge. The thesis is expected to demonstrate thorough investigation and critical examination of an approved topic, along with an understanding of the appropriate research methods and relevant literature. Assessment for the LLMRes is based solely on the submitted thesis; however, if the examiners cannot reach a decision on this basis, a viva voce examination may be required. Throughout the course of study, candidates will participate in regular supervisory meetings to monitor progress and ensure that the thesis remains on track.
