About Bachelor of Science - Secondary Education - Science - Chemistry Specialization (Grades 9-12)
The College of Education at Concordia University Chicago prepares candidates to teach early childhood and Kindergarten through grade 12. In addition to public school teaching, the program also equips candidates to teach in Lutheran schools and congregations within The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
The Secondary Education major program, designed to meet Illinois State Licensure requirements, combines education courses from the College of Education with subject-area courses. This program prepares candidates to teach grades 9 through 12 in a variety of urban and suburban education settings, including both public and private high schools. Graduates can earn an Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) license to teach in designated subject areas such as English/Language Arts, Biology, Mathematics, and Social Science-History.
As part of the Secondary Education major, candidates learn educational theories and effective teaching practices, including how to design and implement curriculum. The program includes extensive field experiences in diverse school settings, culminating in a rigorous 16-week student-teaching internship where candidates will manage and teach a class of their own.
Candidates are trained by experienced educators who themselves have years of practical classroom experience. Faculty members understand the day-to-day challenges teachers face because they have been there. They work diligently to prepare candidates for the realities of the teaching profession.
Concordia-Chicago's location near Chicago offers access to a rich socioeconomic learning environment at the intersection of urban and suburban communities. Founded as the Addison Teachers Seminary in 1864, the University has a 150-year history of producing some of the most qualified teachers in the country.
More than a dozen CUC graduates have been recognized by the highly prestigious Golden Apple Foundation for outstanding teaching, highlighting the exceptional level of training provided by the College of Education.
