About Bachelor of Arts - Psychology
The program provides students with a solid foundation in which they can build their critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills, applying these abilities to the field of psychology. Students will develop an understanding of the various types of psychology and the theories that underpin them.
Today, psychologists are increasingly focusing on behaviors that affect the mental and emotional health, as well as the mental processes, of healthy individuals. For example, they work with business executives, performers, and athletes to manage stress and improve performance. Psychologists also advise lawyers on jury selection and collaborate with educators on school reform. They are often among the first to respond in the aftermath of a disaster, such as a plane crash or bombing, helping victims and bystanders recover from trauma or shock.
The required courses in the major provide a strong foundation in psychology. Courses such as development, statistics, and research introduce students to the field, preparing them for more advanced courses in areas like social psychology, abnormal psychology, and neuropsychology.
The elective courses within the psychology department allow students to refine their interests and skills. Those pursuing careers in the helping professions can take courses such as Group Dynamics and Leadership Skills, Community Psychology, and Behavior Assessment and Management. Students preparing for continued scholarly work in the psychological sciences are encouraged to take classes like Cognitive Psychology, History and Systems, and Cross-Cultural Psychology.
Students will also choose a capstone experience, either an internship in psychology or a senior seminar in psychology. Through the seminar, students will discuss current topics in psychology, career planning, and the role of psychology in contemporary society.
