About Associate of Arts - Journalism - Transfer Degree (Optional Co-op)
Los Medanos College (LMC) offers a variety of journalism courses to prepare students for a writing and editing career. The publishing industry is undergoing rapid and profound technological changes, and the Journalism Program at Los Medanos College is seeking to keep pace. Through grants over the past few years the college has acquired new Macintosh computers and a large-scale printer, as well as digital still and video cameras. The college newspaper is paginated on site and transmitted electronically to the press, and the photos are all manipulated digitally.
Many students who honed their talents – writers, editors, photographers, paginators and graphic artists – on the college newspaper now work at the Brentwood News, Concord Transcript and Contra Costa Times as a result of their publication experience at Los Medanos College.
This two-year program of study can lead to an entry level position with a community newspaper, or to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a journalism or communications major. The program provides practical training, leading to careers in print journalism, broadcasting, advertising and public relations. The required courses for the major are listed in a recommended sequence.
An Associate in Arts degree may be earned by completion of the major requirements plus requirements defined in the Associate Degree Requirements section of the Los Medanos College Catalog.
