About Master of Arts - Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Situated at the heart of a famous medieval World Heritage site, this MA offers a cutting-edge and student-inspired course of study designed to develop students' research, critical thinking, and professional skills, equipping them to thrive in a global and digitalised world. Students can customise their degree to suit their interests: they will design their own specialist research projects as well as their own graduate research dissertation, which is an important culmination of graduate study that is recognised by employers across a wide range of industries. Study the past to thrive in the future.

This MA is designed to help students maximize their employability through training in public history, digital humanities, and heritage at postgraduate level. It simultaneously makes available the training and resources necessary to take the next step and pursue PhD level research in premodern history and heritage studies. This course offers students an anticipated edge in the professional job market, particularly in the cultural and heritage industries, in teaching, and in the civil service.

Training in advanced and independent research, essay and report-writing, digital humanities and public heritage work, and in the critical interrogation of a wide variety of sources are some of the most sought-after skills by employers. The course team ensures that postgraduate study remains accessible, and students do not need to have completed a History BA in order to apply. This MA is suitable for anyone wishing to return to the academic study of history after a break to pursue a passion for a historical period, to improve intellectual and communication skills, or to start a new career.
