About Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Countering Terrorism and Extremism with Foundation Year (L400)
Students can study Countering Terrorism and Extremism to develop a contextual and critical outlook on the polarizing issues surrounding terrorism and extremism. They will analyze highly publicized cases, delve into aspects of security and threats that the media often overlooks, and gain applied skills in addressing these issues.
Following the tragic events of 9/11 in the USA, the world entered what many perceive as a new era in understanding, perceiving, and reacting to terrorism and extremism. To comprehend current strategies for tackling these phenomena, the course interrogates topics related to their history, inherent complexities, power imbalances, inequality, identity, community, conflict, risk, ethics, politics, policies, international relations, and policing powers.
This four-year degree includes a built-in foundation year, which serves as a supportive gateway to higher education for students who do not quite meet the entry requirements for the undergraduate degree or who wish to develop the academic study skills necessary before beginning a degree course. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students will progress to their chosen undergraduate degree and will graduate with a full undergraduate degree at the end of the course.
Uniquely, this course emphasizes an applied perspective, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is balanced with a practical understanding of real-life tactics to counter terrorism and extremism. The course has also been developed with industry needs in mind. Students will learn through simulated exercises (e.g., Hydra Suite), work on real cases, engage in applied assessments to enrich transferable skills, and benefit from the expertise of a highly experienced teaching team. Input from current and former professionals working in terrorism and extremism areas further enhances the learning experience.
The course builds on CCCU’s extensive experience in policing education and relevant courses focused on countering terrorism and extremism delivered at the university over the last decade. Students will be encouraged to debate, critique, and question concepts and theories within an inclusive and collaborative environment. Knowledge-sharing events are continuously developed, and students will learn in ways that take advantage of the fast-changing landscape of terrorism and extremism.
At CCCU, there is a wide range of practical expertise, providing students with opportunities to learn from varied perspectives, which is key to understanding and responding to terrorism and extremism. This intersection of policing, sociology, criminology, politics, and forensic investigation or law allows for the study of a diverse range of modules that will offer a distinctive learning experience directly relevant to future careers in the criminal justice and private security sectors, including roles in security, intelligence, media, policing, research, politics, and specialist counter-terrorism units or departments.
The university recognizes that employers are looking for dynamic, open-minded graduates who can adapt, innovate, and collaborate. Therefore, it has designed a new approach to teaching and learning to ensure that students are work-ready upon graduation.
