About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Creative and Professional Writing

During the course students will dive into creative forms such as fiction, writing for stage and screen and game narratives. Students will learn how to publicise themselves and their work, develop new and transferrable skills such as self-publishing, submitting to agents and writing for commercial markets, and gain confidence as they explore the wide range of job options open to professionally trained writers.

All the tutors are published authors with recent industry experience. They’ll teach students the essential skills for good writing: control of language, precision, imagination and a deep understanding of the context in which they write. They’ll teach students how to turn their writing dreams into a commercially viable enterprise.

Year 1 is designed to prepare students for the study of creative and professional writing at degree level. They'll take introductory modules in creative forms (poetry, drama and fiction), and professional and non-fiction writing. Students will also study developments in writing and wellbeing, and take a module in contextual studies, which enables them to explore some of the key literary and theoretical movements that inform contemporary writing. In Year 2 students will study six core modules that have optionality built into them, enabling students to focus on particular areas of interest whilst developing essential skills. In Year 3 students will continue to study core modules as well as completing a 10,000 word (40-credit) Final Year Independent Study, supported by a tutor, on a creative subject of their choice.
