About Bachelor of Arts - Art - Art History
The mission of the California State University, Bakersfield Department of Art and Art History is to advance creative research and critical thinking while fostering an encouraging environment for cultural inquiry and artistic experimentation. Located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, the Art and Gallery Programs complement the University’s larger mission by offering California State University, Bakersfield students an opportunity to engage in advanced critical discourse both local and international in scope. The Art Program has a strong local presence but is also designed, in part, to expose the campus and community to the visual culture and sociopolitical currents present in the Los Angeles region and the larger San Joaquin Valley. Distinguished Art and Art History faculty is comprised of nine full-time practicing artists, art historians, and art educators, complemented by an accomplished roster of lecturers and three full-time staff, serving over 125 Art majors as well as the university and community as a whole. The department maintains state-of-the-art facilities for Ceramics, Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography and Digital Media, as well as senior studio spaces.
