About Academic Accelerator - Bachelor of Science - Public Health

The Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) may be completed in as few as two semesters and is designed specifically for students who are ready to succeed in immersive English-speaking classrooms.

The Academic Accelerator program gives students a firsthand, practical, and cultural understanding of the American University campus and the Washington, DC, area through its contextual curriculum. They may enter the program in the spring or fall and progress into year two of their undergraduate education with up to a full year’s worth of academic credits. Depending on their intended degree, they may choose their elective curriculum in social sciences, humanities, or the sciences.

Maintaining and improving public health is one of the great mandates of time, both in the US and abroad. Aging populations, global pandemics, increasing environmental degradation, and a rise in childhood obesity are just some of the many challenges to which the field directly responds. The Bachelor of Science - Public Health Program shows American University's commitment to developing and strengthening public health education, research, and practice.

At the heart of the public health Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science are sets of core courses that ensure that students gain both foundational knowledge and practical skills in the field of public health. Through their electives, they then learn about health issues from the perspective of several disciplines. The electives are set up into four clusters:
  • Global Health
  • Health Science
  • Social and Community Health
  • Policy, Program Planning, and Evaluation
The electives allow students to focus on a specific area of interest.
