The Global Education Undergraduate Merit Scholarship at Western Michigan University (WMU) offers international undergraduate students a valuable opportunity to receive financial support based on academic merit and financial need. Scholarship Value and Duration
- Up to $10,000 per year, awarded in two installments for fall and spring semesters.
- Scholarship funding is available for up to eight semesters or until graduation, whichever occurs first.
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to initial F-1 or J-1 international undergraduate students entering WMU for the first time after secondary school or transferring from another post-secondary institution.
- Includes students admitted for fall or spring semesters, as well as those enrolled in undergraduate degree Pathway programs.
- Must have non-resident international status.
- Requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale (WMU converts all international grading systems accordingly).
- Scholarships are awarded based on merit and the student’s total estimated cost balance.
- Note: Eligibility does not guarantee scholarship receipt due to high competition.
Exclusions
- Visa holders other than F-1 or J-1 international students.
- Students who are fully funded for tuition through Governmental/NGO scholarships or WMU assistantships.
- International undergraduate students enrolled in fully online degree programs (programs consisting entirely of online courses).
Application and Award Process
- No separate scholarship application is required.
- To be considered, students must complete their WMU academic admission with all required materials.
- Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis while funds are available.
- Award notifications are sent at the time of admission or shortly thereafter.
