Spain is home to more than 80 state-accredited universities and hundreds of private higher education institutions, all operating under the internationally recognized Bologna Process framework of the European Higher Education Area.
Spanish degrees have three tiers: Grado (bachelor’s equivalent, 4 years / 240 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits), Master’s (1 to 2 years), and Doctorado (doctoral, i.e. PhD), making them directly comparable to qualifications from across the EU.
Whether you’re seeking an undergraduate degree in engineering, a master’s in business, or a research doctorate in the sciences, Spain’s higher education system is designed to challenge you and reward your commitment. After graduating, your credentials will be recognized by employers and institutions around the world.
Spain consistently ranks among Europe’s most popular destinations for international students. In addition to its institutions’ academic quality, students are also drawn in by Spain’s exceptional lifestyle, its vibrant cities, warm climate, welcoming culture, and incredible food.
Spain’s membership in the Schengen Area means that studying here also makes it easier to explore. Whether you’re spending a weekend in Lisbon, Paris, or Rome, Spain is your gateway to the rest of Europe.
With degrees fully aligned to the Bologna Process, students graduate with qualifications that are recognized across the EU and valued globally. This means your hard work can translate directly into career opportunities worldwide.

One of Spain’s advantages is its generous work authorization for international students. Non-EU international students enrolled in accredited higher education programs may work up to 30 hours per week during term time with no separate work permit required.
This flexibility gives you more time to gain European work experience and build connections while completing your program. Note that most part-time jobs will require at least conversational Spanish.
After graduation, eligible graduates may apply for a 12-month post-study extension to give you time to search for skilled employment and launch your career in Europe.
Spain offers a premium European education at a fraction of the cost of many other popular study destinations. Public universities in Spain charge some of the lowest tuition fees in Western Europe for non-EU students, with annual fees typically ranging from €700 to €3,500 depending on the program and institution. Note that private universities may charge higher tuition, sometimes up to €20,000 per year.
That said, private Spanish universities also offer competitive pricing, particularly for English-taught programs in business, design, technology, and the creative arts. Many institutions offer merit-based tuition discounts, institutional scholarships, and flexible payment plans to help ensure students can reach their study goals.
Beyond tuition, the cost of living in Spain is considerably lower than in northern and western European capital cities. Food, housing, transportation, and social activities are all within reach on a student budget, especially outside of Madrid and Barcelona.
Study in Spain, Explore All of Europe
International students in Spain can explore 28 other European countries in the Schengen Area more easily. Whether it’s a weekend trip to Paris, or going from Barcelona to Rome in two hours, your student life isn’t limited to one city or one country.

Whether you settle in Madrid’s cosmopolitan neighborhoods, Barcelona’s creative districts, Valencia’s university quarter, Seville’s historic old city, or Murcia’s welcoming international campus, you’ll find a community ready to welcome you.
Spain is one of Europe’s most diverse countries. With its EU membership and Schengen Area status, Spain is at the heart of a connected continent, giving you unparalleled opportunities to travel and network across Europe.
Spanish culture is vibrant and deeply social. Festivals, local markets, student clubs, and an active nightlife make it easy to build friendships, find your community, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Learning even basic Spanish opens doors that will enrich your experience on and off campus.
Non-EU international students who wish to study in Spain for more than 90 days must apply for a Spanish Long-Stay Student Authorization (Autorización de Estancia de Larga Duración por Estudios). The process is managed through your nearest Spanish consulate or BLS International center.
