Important Announcement: International Students Remain Eligible for PGWP with Online-Only Format

Since the Government of Canada announced the closure of our border in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19, ApplyBoard has been working tirelessly to identify the impacts of restrictions on student movement. We have had many meaningful conversations with international students, educational institutions, Recruitment Partners, and other stakeholders. Through these conversations, we gathered information that we turned into potential solutions that we presented to policy markers.

Discussions with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada/Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada (IRCC), Universities Canada, Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Ontario Government, and many others have been highly productive. All stakeholders are aligned in our desire to support international students in beginning or continuing their studies during this challenging time.

We are pleased to let you know that the IRCC has just announced the following:

If your in-class courses are being moved to an online-only format because of COVID-19, your eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program won’t be affected. This includes students who have a study permit or who have been approved for a study permit for a program starting in May or June but who are unable to travel to Canada at this time due to travel restrictions. International students in this situation may begin their classes while outside Canada and may complete up to 50% of their program while outside Canada if they cannot travel to Canada sooner.

This is an incredibly positive development for international students, allowing them to continue on their educational journey without delays or impacting their future opportunities.
