10 Best Scholarships in Canada for International Students

Between tuition, residence, food, and other living costs, students can expect to spend thousands of dollars per year while studying abroad.
The good news is universities and colleges give out many financial aid awards each term. In fact, there are so many scholarships available, it can be difficult to know which ones you may qualify for. With that in mind, today we’re featuring 10 scholarships in Canada available to international students. However, it’s important to note some of the awards may not be available at the time you read this. Be sure to use the links for more information.
Name: Chancellor’s Award
Algoma University is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in the heart of the Great Lakes. The university focuses on international recruitment, with over 27% of its students coming from outside of Canada. To that end, Algoma has a number of great scholarships available for international students, including the Chancellor’s Award. This award is worth $5,000 and is one of the best entrance scholarships in Canada. targeted at students with top grades. To qualify, students must have a minimum A+ or 90% on their previous academic record. Additionally, international students needs an overall IELTS score of 7 or higher, plus a temporary resident visa.

Bow Valley College
Name: International Student Entrance Scholarship
Bow Valley College is home to students from 148 countries around the world. Located in Calgary, Alberta, Bow Valley specializes in business and healthcare career programs. The main scholarship offered is the International Student Entrance Scholarship, worth $2,000. Bow Valley hands out four of these awards to students enroled in full-time certificate or diploma programs. To apply, students must describe their future career goals and identify how their academic studies at Bow Valley will support these goals.

Name: Regional – Degree Entrance Scholarship
Conestoga ranks among Canada’s best colleges and fastest growing. Over 3,200 international students from 77 countries attend Conestoga, which has several locations in the province of Ontario. Conestoga specializes in programs across a variety of fields, offering studies at Bachelor (Degree), Post-Graduate, Diploma, and Graduate certificate levels. There are several scholarships available to international students, depending on their level of study.
At $3,000, the Degree Entrance Scholarship awards the most money and is available in the Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters. This award is given to students with the highest academic averages and an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also required. Entrance Scholarships for Diploma ($1,500) and Graduate Certificate ($1,500) programs are also available.

Fairleigh Dickinson University
Name: Col. Farleigh S. Dickinson Scholarship
Amount: Up to $32,000 per year (USD)
Fairleigh Dickinson University has a campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, but is actually an American private university. This is why the above scholarship is offered in U.S. dollars, as students will earn an American college degree, even while studying in Canada. To qualify for the award, students must take the SAT/ACT. Academic merit is also taken into consideration and the scholarship is renewable up to four years. Other scholarships available include the FDU International ($27,000) and FDU International Graduate ($1,000 to $10,000). Name: International Entrance Scholarship
Amount: $7,500 (also other amounts)
Located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Lakehead is regarded as one of the top research universities in Canada. Lakehead’s newly established Faculty of Law, as well as its School of Medicine have helped it routinely rank in the top 10 for education among Canadian universities. There are several entrance scholarships available to international students, with the largest awarding $7,500. The best part is no application is required; students are automatically considered based on their academic standing. These scholarships are also renewable, provided students maintain a high enough average in each academic year. Northern Lights College
Name: NLC Foundation Entrance Award
Northern Lights College (NLC) has several campuses in British Columbia (ApplyBoard is partnered with the Dawson Creek and Fort St. John locations). Northern Lights prides itself on being the BC college of choice for Energy, Technology, and Academic Learning. For Fall and Winter intakes, international students can apply for the NLC Foundation Entrance Award. This scholarship is worth $1,000 and to apply, students need only submit the following:
- A completed general application form
- Letter outlining how application meets the award’s criteria
- Transcript of marks

St. Lawrence College
Name: BBA Entry Scholarship
St. Lawrence College is one of Eastern Ontario’s leading institutions, with campuses in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall. The college boasts small class sizes and over 100 programs, including popular business administration and early childhood education diplomas. For students enrolled in the former, the BBA Entry Scholarship awards $2000 towards tuition. This scholarship is open to all international students entering the Bachelor of Business Administration program. The requirements are a minimum academic average of 70% and overall IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.

Vancouver Film School
Name: Game Design Programming for Games, Web and Mobile Entrance Scholarship
Vancouver Film School is one of the best places in Canada to study film. Graduates have gone on to work in major Hollywood productions such as Doctor Strange and Disney’s Moana. However, the college is also home to an excellent game design faculty and just this year began offering two of the best scholarships in Canada. Vancouver Film School partnered with Victor Lucas, a video game industry veteran and founder of EPN, to help in-need students studying video game design and programming.
The first scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Game Design program, while the second will be awarded to an applicant in the Programming for Games, Web and Mobile program. These are full-tuition scholarships worth up to $250,000 in funding! However, the deadline for applications closes on April 1, 2019. Wilfrid Laurier University
Name: Entrance Merit Scholarship
Amount: Up to $5,000
Founded in 1911, Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) is one of Waterloo, Ontario’s two world class universities. WLU has international recognition for its Business faculty. However, the university also offers a variety of innovative programs in other areas of study. As such, Wilfrid Laurier’s Business programs attract many international students each year and are popular among students who use ApplyBoard.
To help with the costs of tuition, students can apply for the Entrance Merit Scholarship. Students have a chance of being awarded up to $5,000 for their first-year admission, depending on their academic average (80-100% is needed to qualify). Name: Entrance Bursary
